This wasn’t a taskbar anymore; it was a billboard. It was a neon sign flashing "The World Is Ending" directly into my peripheral vision every time I minimized a spreadsheet. The final straw was the headline: “Man fights goose; goose wins.”

I clicked the weather icon.

I closed the panel. I exhaled. But the icon remained. A sun and a cloud, mocking me. A permanent fixture on my strip of digital land. I realized then that the operating system no longer served the user; the user served the engagement metrics.

I realized then that removing the news wasn't just about decluttering a user interface. It was an act of rebellion against the Attention Economy.

I decided to cut it out.

We are told that we need "curated feeds" and "personalized content." We are told that a computer isn't complete unless it is screaming the stock prices and the war casualties at us in equal measure. We are told that empty space is wasted space.
