Upon its first major exhibition at the Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona (MACBA) in the early 1990s, Cronos was hailed as a landmark of conceptual photography. Critics compared it to the work of Joan Fontcuberta (with whom Formiguera later collaborated) and the films of David Lynch or the writings of Borges—all dealing with the slippage between reality and representation.
Formiguera’s genius lies in the range of media and the consistency of the scientific aesthetic:
