A series of events leads to them inadvertently stealing a van, a rental car, and even a volunteer police officer in a wheelchair. The plot kicks into high gear when they manage to secure a slot at the "Northern Damnation" metal festival in Norway. The film chronicles their chaotic, disastrous, and hilarious road trip to get to the festival, facing obstacles like police chases, car trouble, and internal conflicts about selling out versus staying true to their roots.
Directed by and Jukka Vidgren , Heavy Trip follows Turo (Johannes Holopainen), the shy, deeply committed vocalist of a Finnish death metal band called Impaled Rektum. The band practices religiously in a reinforced underground bunker, but they’ve never performed live due to a crippling combination of stage fright, social awkwardness, and sheer bad luck. watch heavy trip
Upon its release, Heavy Trip won the Audience Award at SXSW 2018 and went on to screen at over 50 festivals worldwide. It has since earned comparisons to The Full Monty (for its working-class underdog story) and This Is Spinal Tap (for its musical satire), but it stands entirely on its own. The humor is often deadpan, very Finnish (long pauses, deep sighs), and occasionally grotesque (the corpse-in-the-van never stops being funny). Yet it never feels mean.
