The Garuda Purana is one of the eighteen Mahapuranas. It is primarily known for its detailed description of the afterlife, funeral rites (Antyeshti), and the concept of heaven and hell (Karma Vipaka). Because of this, it is traditionally recited during the 13-day mourning period in Hindu households, though it also contains sections on Dharma (ethics), Medicine (Ayurveda), and Worship (Puja Vidhi).
