The A-plot centers on Sheldon Cooper’s desire to avoid the bacterial Petri dish that is the public school bus. In a characteristically precocious move, he attempts to hack into a local radio station’s contest to win a car. While the hack is successful, the result is a "prize" that befits a child: a giant plastic crayon. However, the act itself—broadcasting without a license—draws the attention of the FCC and local law enforcement.

: Because the school is in Dallas, Sheldon must live during the week with a host family, Dr. Flora Douglas and her husband.

The "Ankle Monitor" of the title represents a physical restriction that Sheldon finds intellectually insulting. The comedy stems from the absurdity of a nine-year-old on house arrest, but the underlying tension is genuine. Sheldon is confronted with the fact that his actions have consequences that affect his family, specifically his father, George Sr. The subplot forces Sheldon to reckon with the boundary between being smart and being wise. He realizes that for all his knowledge of radio frequencies, he failed to calculate the human variable of law enforcement.
