Because Google Fonts are almost exclusively (SIL Open Font License, or OFL), the "download" is actually a redistribution.
If you searched for "Google Fonts free download" and clicked a link that isn't fonts.google.com or github.com/google/fonts , be very careful.
If you host fonts on a CDN different from your main domain (e.g., cdn.yoursite.com ), you must configure Cross-Origin Resource Sharing (CORS) headers. If you forget, the browser downloads the font, sees the missing header, and silently refuses to render text. You get invisible text.
