Active Transport Protein Pump [patched] Jun 2026
Active transport protein pumps are the tireless workhorses of the cell membrane. They differ from passive channels in two fundamental ways: they move substances against their concentration gradient, and they require energy. By creating and maintaining concentration gradients—most notably the sodium and potassium gradients—these pumps store potential energy that the cell uses to perform work, transmit signals, and maintain homeostasis. Without them, cells would be unable to function, and complex life would be impossible.
