Before Gumball could cry again, they heard the distinct sound of their mother’s car pulling into the driveway. Nicole Watterson was home from work. Panic set in. If Nicole saw the ruined DVD, Gumball’s life would effectively be over.
The imaginary scene cut to a gravestone that read: Here lies Gumball. He didn't return his DVD on time.
For returning fans, the episode is charmingly primitive. There are elements that feel "off" compared to the show’s golden age (Seasons 2-4). Darwin’s voice is slightly higher, the pacing is slower, and the satire isn’t as sharp. Yet, the DNA is all there. The family’s loving dysfunction, the town of weirdos, and the willingness to destroy its own characters for a laugh are present from frame one.
While later seasons would lean into meta-humor and existential philosophy, "The DVD" is pure, classic cartoon mayhem—think Tom and Jerry meets The Simpsons on a sugar rush.
After a wild goose chase involving a garbage truck, a runaway shopping cart, and a near-death experience with a steamroller, the boys finally track the DVD to (their grumpy, elderly neighbor). He’s using the case as a coaster. They retrieve it, race home, only to realize they’ve lost the remote again inside the rental store. The episode ends with Gumball screaming in frustration as the credits roll.
Snapping back to reality, Gumball grabbed Darwin by the shoulders. "We have to find it! Mom cannot know about this!"
