The Strait of Malacca is one of the most important shipping lanes in the world, acting as the main artery connecting the economies of the East and West. Stretching approximately 500 miles (800 km) between the Malay Peninsula and the Indonesian island of Sumatra, this narrow waterway links the Indian Ocean to the South China Sea and the Pacific Ocean.
