Based on the real-life courtship of comedian Kumail Nanjiani and his wife, Emily V. Gordon, The Big Sick tells the story of a Pakistan-born aspiring comic in Chicago who meets an American graduate student at one of his shows. They fall in love, but their relationship hits a wall when cultural expectations regarding Kumail’s traditional Muslim family clash with his feelings for Emily. Shortly after a breakup, Emily falls mysteriously ill and is placed into a medically induced coma, forcing Kumail to navigate the crisis alongside her parents, whom he has never met.
