Method 1: Using a Bootable CD/USB (DBAN – Darik's Boot and Nuke) – Recommended
Download DBAN on a working computer from its official website (SourceForge). Burn DBAN to a CD (or use Rufus to make a bootable USB – though DBAN works best from CD on old XP hardware). Insert the CD into the XP machine. Boot from the CD – you may need to press F12, F2, or Del during startup to change the boot order to CD/DVD drive first. DBAN will load – you will see a blue screen with a command prompt. Type: autonuke and press Enter. This starts a secure wipe (DoD short) on all detected hard drives. Wait – this can take hours depending on drive size. When finished , the screen will show a success message. The drive is now blank.
Method 2: Using Windows XP Installation CD (Destructive but less secure)
Boot from the Windows XP CD . Press Enter to set up Windows XP. Press F8 to accept the license agreement. When you see the list of existing partitions: wipe windows xp hard drive
Select each partition and press D to delete it, then L to confirm. Delete all partitions until you have only “Unpartitioned space.”
Press F3 twice to quit setup. The drive is now wiped of partition information – data may still be recoverable with tools.
Method 3: From within Windows XP (if still bootable) – for logical wipe Method 1: Using a Bootable CD/USB (DBAN –
Download and run Eraser (old version 5.8.8 works on XP). Right-click the C: drive (or any drive to wipe) and select Erase . Choose Gutmann (35 passes) or US DoD 5220.22-M . Click OK – but note: you cannot wipe the system drive while Windows is running. This method works best for secondary drives.
Important Notes
Once wiped, data is gone forever – no recovery possible. If the drive has XP installed and you want to reuse the PC, wipe with DBAN then install a lightweight Linux OS (since XP is no longer safe online). For physical destruction – after wiping, you can drill holes or smash the drive platters for absolute certainty. Boot from the CD – you may need
Wiping a Windows XP hard drive is a critical step before selling, donating, or recycling an old computer to ensure your personal data—like passwords, financial records, and private photos—cannot be recovered. Because standard deletion or formatting only hides files rather than removing them, you must use specific tools or methods to permanently overwrite the data. Method 1: Using DBAN (Best for Complete Erasure) Darik’s Boot and Nuke (DBAN) is a free, open-source tool widely considered the gold standard for completely wiping traditional Hard Disk Drives (HDDs). It works outside of Windows, allowing it to erase the entire physical drive, including the operating system. Preparation : Download the DBAN ISO file and burn it to a USB flash drive using a tool like Rufus. Boot from USB : Restart your PC and press keys like F12 , F10 , or ESC to enter the boot menu, then select your USB drive. Choose Wiping Method : Once DBAN loads, type interactive to see all options. Select your hard drive using the spacebar. Press M to choose a wiping method. DoD Short (3 passes) is recommended for most users. Execute : Press F10 to start. The process can take several hours depending on the drive size. Method 2: Using the Windows XP Installation Disc If you have your original Windows XP CD, you can use the setup utility to delete and format partitions. This is less secure than DBAN but effective for a fresh start. Boot from CD : Insert the disc and restart your computer. Press any key when prompted to "Boot from CD". Partition Management : On the "Welcome to Setup" screen, press Enter . Agree to the license (F8). Delete Partitions : Select the existing partition (usually the C: drive) and press D to delete it, then L to confirm. Format : Select the unpartitioned space and press C to create a new partition. Choose to format the partition using the NTFS file system (Full format is more thorough than Quick). Method 3: Third-Party Software (No CD Required) If you don't have a disc and can still log into Windows, you can use specialized software. Windows XP Formatting and Clean Installation
