Phylogenetic analysis (maximum‑likelihood and Bayesian frameworks) places Mayakayagaia within Upper Stem‑Group Euarthropoda , as the sister taxon to Waptia fieldensis and Chuandianella ovata . Functional‑morphological assessment suggests a nektonic filter‑feeding lifestyle , with the spiny tergites providing hydrodynamic stability and the biramous trunk appendage operating as a dual‑function respiratory/feeding organ.
