Iser began his academic career as a lecturer at the University of Cologne in 1954. In 1960, he moved to the University of Mรผnster, where he became a professor of English and Romance literature. In 1973, Iser was appointed as a professor of literary theory at the University of Konstanz, a position he held until his retirement in 1993.
