Though seemingly killed at the end of Inferno , Madelyne Pryor has been resurrected and reintegrated into X-Men lore, most notably during the Krakoa era (2019–2021). Recent narratives have attempted to redeem the character, acknowledging that her villainy was precipitated by manipulation (by Sinister) and abandonment (by Cyclops).

“Do what?” she asked, almost sweetly. “Exist? Remember? Or do you mean this ?”

She didn’t turn. She knew the voice—measured, metallic, weary. Cyclops. Scott. The man who had loved her, married her, replaced her with a ghost.

“I’m sorry,” Jean whispered. “I’m so sorry.”

However, the character’s trajectory shifted dramatically due to editorial mandates regarding the planned X-Factor series, which required the resurrection of Jean Grey. This left Pryor—a character increasingly popular in her own right—in a narrative limbo, setting the stage for her descent into the antagonist known as the Goblin Queen.

She pressed a hand to her chest. Black veins of demonic energy pulsed beneath her skin. Limbo’s taint.

Jean’s eyes glistened. “You are a person.”
