The story follows Maggie Peyton, a recent college graduate who dreams of becoming a racing journalist. Her father, Ray Peyton Sr. (Michael Keaton), is protective of her following a past racing accident. Maggie purchases a dilapidated 1963 Volkswagen Beetle from a junkyard, unaware that the car possesses a sentient personality and a mind of its own.
