In Shehan Karunatilaka’s The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida (2022 Booker Prize winner), the afterlife’s gray, sandy beaches become a purgatory for the war-torn nation. Visual artist Jagath Weerasinghe’s “Yakadura” series features ghostly figures emerging from dunes—haunted by civil war memories.
