This paper examines the recurring trope of the punished heroine—a female protagonist who undergoes physical, emotional, or social suffering as a purported condition for redemption, love, or moral resolution. From Victorian novels to modern thrillers, punishment is often framed as necessary for a heroine’s growth or as retribution for her transgression against patriarchal norms. By analyzing literary and cinematic examples, this paper argues that the punished heroine trope reinforces gendered expectations of sacrifice, purity, and endurance, while sometimes being subverted in contemporary works.
