LibreOffice’s origins trace back to the StarOffice suite, acquired by Sun Microsystems in 1999 and later released as open-source under the name OpenOffice.org. Following Oracle’s acquisition of Sun Microsystems in 2010, community members grew concerned that Oracle would discontinue the open-source project or treat it as a strictly commercial entity.
Unlike proprietary software driven by a single corporate entity, LibreOffice is stewarded by TDF, a non-profit entity. Development is funded by donations and supported by a large ecosystem of volunteers and corporate sponsors (such as Collabora and Red Hat).
