Theodosius advanced on Aquileia. Magnus Maximus’ soldiers, seeing the cause lost, surrendered their commander. Maximus was captured and executed on August 28, 388 . Theodosius then reunited the entire Roman Empire under his sole authority (for the last time before the permanent division after 395 CE).
