The film is based on the true story of Newton Knight, a Civil War deserter who led a rebellion against the Confederacy in Mississippi. In 1863, Knight, a poor white farmer, deserted the Confederate Army and returned to his home in Jones County, Mississippi. He soon joined a group of fellow deserters and slaves who were seeking refuge in the nearby swamps.
